Prof. Burkhard CORVES has studied Mechanical Engineering with a special focus on automotive engineering at RWTH Aachen University starting from 1979 finishing with his Diploma degree in 1984. In 1989 he was awarded the Dr.-Ing. title with his dissertation on „Simulation of the kinematic and dynamic behaviour of manipulators with partially closed kinematic chains“, with the degree „magna cum laude“. After having served both as PhD candidate and Chief Engineer at Institute of Mechanism Theory and Machine Dynamics (IGM) he started as research- and development engineer with Emhart Glass Germany GmbH in Neuss, Germany in 1991 and in 1993 as project leader with Emhart Glass SA in Cham, Switzerland. During that time from 1991 to 2000 he held a university teaching assignment at RWTH Aachen University on the topic of “Kinematics and dynamics of spatial mechanisms, robots and manipulators”. In 2000 he was appointed University Professor and Director of IGM of RWTH Aachen University, which later became the Institute of Mechanism Theory, Machine Dynamics and Robotics (IGMR). As the director of IGMR he teaches and researches in the domains of mechanism theory, machine dynamics and robotics, with most of the research projects being cross-domain projects. Since 2010 he is also Adjunct Professor at Beijing Jiaotong University, has been awarded Doctor Honoris Causa of Universitatea Politehnica Timișoara, Romania and was Visiting Professor at Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2019. Prof. CORVES is frequent reviewer of several journals and conferences in the domains of Mechanism Theory, Machine Dynamics and Robotics and chaired several national and international conferences. Additionally, he is engaged as a reviewer for national and international funding organizations. He is member of the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure (VDI) and the Deutsche Glastechnische Gesellschaft (DGG) , where he also serves as Board Member. In the VDI he chairs the VDI-Committee “Mechanisms for handling and manipulation“ as well as the VDI-Scientific Board on “Mechanism and Machine Theory”. Additionally, he serves as National Chair of the German section of IFToMM (International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science). Prof. CORVES has authored more than 600 publications containing books, journal and conference papers covering different topics such as industrial and mobile robotics, linkages, cam mechanism, glass machinery, pneumatic mechanisms, computer-aided graphical analysis and synthesis in mechanism theory, mechatronic development and machine design strategy.
Title: Past, Current and Future Research Topics in Parallel Robotics with Special Emphasis on Delta Robotics Research at IGMR, RWTH Aachen University
Keywords: Parallel Robotics, Sustainable Delta Robots, Kinematic and Dynamic Optimization
Abstract: In this keynote, I present parallel robotics research at IGMR with special emphasis on Delta robots from its start several years ago until today also including future topics. The research history is also strongly connected with our research collaboration with Science Tokyo and an intensive exchange of students and PhD candidates between IGMR of RWTH Aachen University and the Mechanical Systems Design Laboratory (MSD) of Tokyo Tech, now Science Tokyo, led by YUKIO TAKEDA. Starting from topological, kinematic and dynamic optimization of Delta robots, the research concentrated on sustainable Delta robots with increased energy efficiency, high precision and minimized vibrations.
